How to Get Free or Low-Cost Treatment for Depression

Posted by Dreamer On July - 31 - 2009 Comments

Perhaps the only thing worse than depression is having depression and not being able to afford treatment. I frequently get letters from those of you who are in just this predicament. I’ve collected here all of the free and low-cost resources and ideas that I have come across in the past couple of years. I will continue to add more as I find them.

LOW COST MEDS

Pill Splitting – An article in the September 1999 issue of Clinical Psychiatry News reports that you may be able to purchase a higher dose pill at a cost only slightly more than the dose you’re currently on and split them in half. In a presentation to the APA, it was reported that patients can save an average of 37% off their current medication costs by pill splitting. A list of the medications surveyed included popular antidepressants.

FREE MEDS

Needy Meds – According to their website: “NeedyMeds is a 501(3)(c) non-profit with the mission of helping people who cannot afford medicine or healthcare costs. The information at NeedyMeds is available anonymously and free of charge.”

The Medicine Program – The Medicine Program’s free services include: a prescription plan, a 24-hour nurse hotline, a dental plan, a medical plan, a vision plan and medical records storage. Their benefits are subsidized by running Google ads on their site.

Free Samples – Often pharmaceutical companies provide physicians with free samples. Ask your doctor is he/she has any samples on hand of your medication. I used to get all my Buspar this way.

ALTERNATIVES TO PRESCRIPTION MEDS

There are several herbals and nutraceuticals on the market that are reputed to work well as antidepressants and anti-anxiety treatments. They are inexpensive and do not require a prescription. St. John’s Wort, melatonin, Kava Kava and Valerian have all been very effective for me personally.

St. John’s Wort (depression)

Evening Primrose Oil (PMS, PMDD)

5-HTP (depression)

SAM-e (depression)

Vitamins and Minerals (depression)

Kava Kava (anxiety)

Valerian (anxiety and sleep)

Melatonin (sleep)

LOW COST TREATMENT

Sliding Scale Fees – Some providers may have sliding-scale fees. Based on your income, the provider will reduce his or her fees.

Negotiate a Lower Fee with Your Doctor – Other providers, if they are aware of your financial limitations, may be willing to negotiate a payment plan that you can afford or to lower their rates according to what your insurance plan pays.

Community Mental Health Centers – Many communities have community mental health centers (CMHCs). These centers offer a range of mental health treatment and counseling services, usually at a reduced rate for low-income people. CMHCs generally require that you have a private insurance plan or be a recipient of public assistance.

Pastoral Counseling Programs – Your church or synagogue can put you in touch with a pastoral counseling program. Certified pastoral counselors, who are ministers in a recognized religious body, have advanced degrees in pastoral counseling, as well as professional counseling experience. Pastoral counseling is often provided on a sliding-scale fee.

SELF-HELP AND SUPPORT GROUPS

Another option is to join a self-help or support group. These groups give people a chance to talk about and work on their common problems-such as alcoholism, substance abuse, depression, family issues, and relationships. Self-help groups are generally free and can be found in most communities. You may also join an online support group right here at About. We have a support group meeting 24 hours a day in our chat room.

PUBLIC ASSISTANCE

People with severe mental illness may be eligible for several forms of public assistance, both to meet basic costs of living and to pay for health care. Such programs include Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and disability benefits.

For information about Social Security, Medicare, and disability benefits call:Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213.

SSA Web site: http://www.ssa.gov/

Medicare – Medicare is America’s major Federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older and for some with disabilities who are under 65. It provides basic protection for the cost of health care. Two programs can help people who have low incomes receive benefits. These are the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) and the Specified Low- Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) programs.

Medicaid – Medicaid pays for some health care costs for America’s poorest people. More information about Medicaid and who is eligible for it is available at local welfare and medical assistance offices. Although there are certain Federal requirements, each State has its own rules and regulations for Medicaid. The Medicaid Clearinghouse contains links to information for individual states.

BECOME A RESEARCH SUBJECT

Many research programs for new meds and treatments will provide free treatment for participants. The downside of this is you run the risk of getting a placebo or an unproven treatment, but if you have nothing to lose, this may be better than no treatment at all.

FREE CLINICS

If anyone knows of other free clinics around the country, please email me and I’ll add them to the list.

5 Things You Should Do if You Think Your Teen is Depressed

Posted by Dreamer On July - 31 - 2009 Comments

Depression is a problem many teens face. It often disguises itself as normal ‘mood swings’ due to puberty or teen angst. Therefore, it is often ignored until something more serious happens, like a suicide attempt or serious risk taking behavior gets the teen into trouble.

Teen Depression: TollieSchmidt.com

Teen Depression: TollieSchmidt.com

If you think your teen is depressed, do not ignore it. If your teen is depressed, there are things you can do and steps you can take that will help your teenager overcome their depression. If it turns out he/she is not depressed, you’ve showed him/her that you cared enough to check it out. Either way, you and your teen wins.

Here are five things you should do if you think your teen is depressed:

  • Talk with your teen about your concerns. Share with him/her that you have noticed some signs of depression and what those signs are. Ask your teen what he/she feels is causing these signs. You may find they have an explanation. The most important part of this talk is for you to let your teen know that you are there and you can help.
  • Make an appointment for your teen to see their doctor. There could be a physical reason for your teenager to be showing some of the symptoms you are seeing.
  • Check your teen’s family medical history. You need to know if there is any clinical depression or other mood disorders that may affect your teen.
  • Make an appointment for a consultation with a specialist in adolescent psychology. Once you have talked to them, you will feel more comfortable with making an appointment for your teen.
  • You need to not talk to anyone else. As much as possible, keep this to yourself. You need to respect your teen’s privacy and not share this with everyone in the family.

Look Hot Without Taking Off Your Clothes

Posted by Dreamer On July - 30 - 2009 Comments

We live in a culture where dressing scantily and provocatively seems to be the new norm. Television commercials are filled with young women wearing next to nothing selling everything from cars and bikes to pretzels and chips. Music videos feature girls in string bikinis and thongs being reduced to mere sex objects. And entertainers like Britney Spears and Lil Kim seem to be competing for the skimpiest outfit of the year award. It’s enough to make a girl feel like she doesn’t measure up unless she’s wearing the shortest, tightest and hoochiest outfit that she can find.

There is nothing wrong with looking cute and sassy. But you can look cute and sassy without taking off all your clothes. Why not follow some of the fashion trends while hooking it up with your own unique style. Your clothing speaks to others long before they have an opportunity to get to know you. And although you may not want to send a message out that says, “I’m easy.” Like it or not, people may form that opinion about you if you dress too provocative. And while you should not obsess over what other people think about you, there are some instances where it does matter like: a job interview, a college interview or meeting your boyfriend’s parents.

Dress for the occasion and wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. There are lots of great clothes that are stylish, affordable and appropriate for your age. The media tries to encourage girls to look and act older than they are. But you’re too smart to let the media do your thinking for you. Make your fashion choices based on your own unique style. Here are some helpful tips for dressing in style on a budget.

· Volunteer to Model for A Department Store or Community Fashion Show

Some department stores use real people models to showcase their new fashions. Sometimes the models even get to keep an outfit or purchase it at a discounted price. Also modeling for a church or community sponsored fashion show can be another great way to earn cool stuff. Ask around and see, you never know.

· Shop In Your Girlfriend’s Closet

If you are like most young women, I’ll bet that your closet is full of clothes that you’ve never worn or haven’t worn in ages; outfits that you hang on to telling yourself that someday you’ll wear them. Why not get together with a group of friends and have a clothing swap. Tell all your girls to go through their closets, dresser drawers and shoe boxes and bring in stuff that they haven’t worn in a long time or they don’t plan on wearing. Maybe one of your friends will have a skirt that goes perfectly with that funky blouse you got for you’re birthday. Perhaps that jacket you’re mother bought you that you absolutely hate will go perfectly with your best friend’s leather boots. And whatever items are left can be donated to a shelter. Shopping in your girlfriend’s closet is the perfect way to get new clothes without spending any money.

· Learn How to Sew

Learning how to sew is a great way to dress fashionably without spending a lot of money. Get your grandma’s old sewing machine out and ask her to show you some basic stitches. Find out if there’s a sewing class in your neighborhood and get to sewing. Once you get really good at it: who knows, you may even start a part time business making outfits for your friends.

· Go to Thrift and Consignment Shops

Believe it or not, you can find some great items at thrift and consignment shops if you look with a discerning eye. Create your own look by trying on different items, then buy what looks good on you.

· Go to Outlets

The wonderful thing about outlets is they offer your favorite brands at discounted prices. Visit the outlet stores in your town and scope the clearance racks for additional bargains.

5 Tips For Bodybuilding At College

Posted by Dreamer On July - 30 - 2009 Comments

When you come to move into college it can be an exciting and some testing time, especially if you are serious about your weight training and bodybuilding. As you’ll no longer have access to your favorite gym or all the healthy food you’d normally be able to have at home and you’ll probably find that sharing fridges and kitchens can be a headache.

Teen Bodybuilding and Supplements: TollieSchmidt.com

Teen Bodybuilding and Supplements: TollieSchmidt.com

You’ll need to be dedicated and motivated

It might take you a week or two to get settled in and it can be daunting starting at college, however once you find your feet, if you have high levels of commitment and drive you’ll have no problems keeping in shape and getting that perfect toned body. However there are a number of essentials tips that’ll help you on your way.

Set goals and plan ahead

Before you start college it is essential that you set out clear and specific goals and devise a training program for the year and make a commitment to stick to it. Don’t forget this includes your nutrition and diet as well as your workouts.

Get the right nutrition

If possible try and stay in self catered accommodation so that you can have maximum control over your nutrition and ensure that you’re eating the right foods. If not you are going to have more of a difficult job, as college food in catered accommodation is average at best and most certainly not ideal for packing on muscle and burning off fat. If you find yourself in this situation don’t over do your eating on the college food, especially if its food your body isn’t used to, instead save up for a small fridge for your room. Budget for some healthy food week and stock up your fridge with good nutritious food which your body will thank you for.

Stock up on protein shakes and healthy snacks

Before you go to your lectures or classes each day, make up a healthy lunch for yourself so that you can avoid the canteen, take some protein shakes or snakes as well to ensure you don’t go hungry and your body stays fuelled. If you have to go into the canteen, don’t be tempted by the unhealthy food, it’ll just undo all the good work you’ve been doing down the gym. Try to stick to the food options you’d normally go for such as chicken, eggs, pasta, tuna, salads and cottage cheese.

Find your local gyms

As soon as you get there spend some time orientating yourself with the area you are staying, find the local gyms, have a look around and see which ones are best suited to your needs. Speak to some of the instructors and find out the best routes for running so you can get your cardio training in. Don’t forget to check the opening times of the gyms and their prices, many will give you a student discount on membership, so make sure you ask.

Form good habits and avoid the booze

Watch your habits and try and form good ones, make sure you get enough sleep and organise your time so that you get your work and training done, as well as making the most of the social activities. Try to avoid the drinking as you’ll be throwing your training away; if you are just bodybuilding for fun and to look and feel good don’t feel bad about having a few drinks at the week end, but remember drink in moderation and be responsible. If you are bodybuilding for competition then there is no way any alcoholic drinks should be getting past your lips. As alcohol lowers your testosterone, dehydrates and will cause you to put on fat. Abstain from drinking and your friends will soon respect your for discipline and commitment.

These studies indicate that although the body’s total water is increased, the increase is proportional to the weight gained. Since muscle is abour 80% water, if you were to gain 10 lbs of muscle, then 8 lbs of the weight gain would be water, and the body’s total percentage of water would not be affected. Many studies show that long-term creatine supplementation increases fat-free mass, and has no effect on the percentage of total body water.

Should children or teens take creatine? No studies have ever shown that creatine supplementation may be harmful to children or teens, however less is known about the effects of supplementation in younger athletes.

Consequently, I would only recommend creatine supplementation to a teen who is involved in a serious training program, is eating a well-balanced diet, and has supervision for his/her supplementation program.

Teen Bodybuilding: Advice to Teens Starting Out

Posted by Dreamer On July - 30 - 2009 Comments

The basics of bodybuilding for teenagers is the same as for adult bodybuilders: train right, eat right, and rest right. Because teens’ bodies are growing and have fast metabolisms, these points are more important for a teen. Before starting on a bodybuilding program, the teen and his or her parent might want to schedule a doctor’s appointment first to go over proper nutrition and the exercise routine.

Teen Bodybuilding and Supplements: TollieSchmidt.com

Teen Bodybuilding and Supplements: TollieSchmidt.com

The first thing a teen needs to do is eat right. Bodybuilders require more calories and more protein than nonbodybuilders. Figure out how many calories your body will need and what foods you should be eating in a day to give you those calories. Use quality protein sources, whole grains, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. You do not have to completely give up fast food and other junk food, but limit those to one day a week. If possible, eat six times a day. Sometimes it will feel that you spend more time eating than any other activity. If so, you’re probably doing it right. In addition to eating a lot, be sure to drink a lot of water as well.

There are some supplements that you will want to consider taking to help you get all the nutrition necessary. These include a quality multivitamin, a protein powder such as hemp or whey, essential fatty acids, and glutamine. Although supplements can play an important role, they do not replace proper nutrition. Do not get tempted by steroids. You can have the body you desire without exposing yourself to the danger of steroids. Instead, focus on healthy, natural bodybuilding.

In addition to eating right, you want to train right. This means that you do not over-train. Your muscles need rest in order to grow and over-training can lead to serious injuries. Go to the gym three to four times a week. Focus on a different muscle group each time. Each workout should last under an hour. Be sure to use proper form. Watch yourself in the mirror to make sure you are doing your reps correctly. Be intense with your workout and go heavy instead of doing endless sets.

Finally, you want to rest right. Be sure you are giving your body adequate time to recover between workouts. Without rest, your muscles will not grow. If you become injured, take the time off to recover. You cannot work through an injury. Be sure you get adequate rest at night. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Anything less than seven hours a night and you are not giving your body time to recover. It can take a while to get into a good sleep pattern, but with time it will become a habit.

As long as teens research, plan, and train right, bodybuilding will bring great health benefits. It takes time and focus, but the results are worth it.

Teen Dating Advice – Put Up The Shot-Gun Dad!

Posted by Dreamer On July - 29 - 2009 Comments

Your teen just received or gave out a card on Valentine’s Day. The other person involved, is a school mate she fancies and would really love to go out with – a potential date. With all the dangers out there in the world today, you have dreaded the time when your teen will ask to go out with another teen on a date. Yet, it cannot be avoided. So how do you handle the situation so that teenager dating advice is effective and helpful?

Now, when it comes to Teen Dating Advice I have a set of video’s I always recommend. Most parents do the raising of the eyebrows when I suggest them. Well they make you laugh your butt off together, and if these absolutely horrific and embarrassing situations won’t make you think twice before rushing things, I don’t know what will. Tollie’s Ultimate Teen Dating Video’s

Teen Dating Advice The Over-Protective Father: TollieSchmidt.com

Teen Dating Advice The Over-Protective Father: TollieSchmidt.com

1. Communicate clearly to your teen the age at which she may begin dating. This will depend on the maturity of your teen. Most parents will allow only group dates before age sixteen. A lot depends on how responsible your teen is and how capable she is of taking control in a difficult situation.

2. Know who your teen hangs out with and meet their parents if possible. Find out what they like to do together and where they like to go. The safety of your teen could also depend on who she is out with. If you are not sure of the maturity level of her date or you cannot trust his judgment, then do not entrust your teen’s life into his hands. Use every opportunity you have to find out as much as you can about the date, and engage him in conversation. That way, you will know him better and will be in a position to make an informed decision as to whether your teen should even date this person. Many an innocent teen has been dragged into sticky and difficult situations.

3. Establish firmly, the rules for both your teen and her date. Ensure that her date is being held to the same values, otherwise, not only will there be conflicts between them but your teen may find herself forever compromising the values you have dutifully, responsibly and lovingly imparted to her. Destinations are to be communicated to you, a curfew is to be observed and certain activities are not to be engaged in – sex, alcohol, drugs, violence or car racing, to name only a few. The consequences of breaking these rules should also be made clear and followed through should it become necessary.

4. Equip your teen with life coping skills so that she may be able to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Ensure that your teen has self worth and respect and will walk away from a date, should the date exhibit any form of violence. Disagreements can lead to loss of self control. Remind your teen that not all victims are fortunate enough to walk away alive and many of those who do, often end up scarred permanently either physically or emotionally or both.

5. Insist on decent clothing and dressing always. Provocative dressing not only speaks badly of the teen wearing them but can also send out the wrong message. Certain types of clothing and jewelry communicate certain messages and may give out signals inviting trouble. Be informed. Being able to interpret your teen’s motives and that of her friends will give you a better picture of what is going on in their lives. By refusing to purchase revealing clothing, you eliminate to a large extent the temptation for her to wear them. Watch out for purses and bags that may contain inappropriate clothing to be changed into once your teen is out of sight. It is also possible for her to borrow clothes she knows you will not allow in your house from friends along the way. Explain to her why it is important to be always decently dressed. Hopefully if she knows and understands, then she will not be tempted.

6. Discuss candidly with your teen, the dangers that lurk out there such as date rape drugs. Drinks, food and rides should not be accepted from strangers. Teen girls especially should avoid being alone in the company of several teen boys, especially boys she does not know, and boys who have been drinking or smoking. Ideally your teen, should not even be in the company of others who have been drinking, smoking or doing drugs. Caution your teen about mob action. Many a time otherwise responsible teens have been dragged into senseless behaviors. At all times, common sense should prevail and peer pressure should not rule the day.

7. Ensure that you and your teen can communicate at all times. Texting, in addition to phone calls does come in handy. Research and find out what technology is available that can help you track your teen down should that become necessary. Explain to your teen that this is not to snoop on them but to be able to help them in emergencies.

8. Imbue your teen with etiquette. Teach your teen sons to open doors for the ladies, etc. Each teen is to be respectful not only of the other but of the other’s family. Two mothers looked at each other in utter disbelief, when teen girls on their way to the school prom arrived at the house of one of the teen boys and did not even greet the parents of the boy who were with him waiting for the entire group to arrive! And at no time during the forty minute wait for the limo to arrive was a word said to the parents!

Teenager dating advice should be ongoing. When it is ingrained in your teen and becomes part and parcel of his or her fabric, your teen is unlikely to stray from the path. Remind often without nagging, all the precautions your teen has to take in order to be safe. Make your teen aware that following the crowd can lead nowhere. Permitting your teen to date is a part of letting go which no doubt can be very frightening. After you have done your homework and are confident that you have equipped your teen with all the information she needs, let your teen know that you are counting on her to act responsibly. Then make an effort not to stress yourself out or worry. Remember to listen to your teen. Not only will you learn so much of what is out there but your teen in knowing that her feelings and opinion matter to you, will take to heart the guidance you give him or her.

Teen Girls Now Abuse Drugs More Than Boys

Posted by Dreamer On July - 29 - 2009 Comments

It’s official, teen girls now have more problems with drug and alcohol abuse than do teen boys; and they more than likely are using drugs or alcohol for completely different reasons. Additionally, because they don’t often show the same type of behavioral disturbances as do teen boy substance abusers, girls often continue to use for longer at unsafe levels before parents ever know the real extent o the problem.

Teen Girls Drug Abuse On The Rise: TollieSchmidt.com

Teen Girls Drug Abuse On The Rise: TollieSchmidt.com

Firstly, teen girls don’t use drugs and alcohol for the same reason that teen boys do.. Teenage boys tend to use drugs and alcohol recreationally, and use for the excitement, fun and experimentation that drugs promise. Girls are far more likely to take drugs or alcohol as a way to combat low self esteem, to gain self confidence in a group, to attract the attention of older teen boys who also use, and to use drugs as a way to combat feelings of depression and anxiety.

Girls suffer more from drug abuse

Unfortunately, teen girls also seem to be uniquely affected by their drug use, and teen girls (already at a higher risk for depression that teen boys) if using and abusing drugs or alcohol are two and a half times more likely to experience clinical depression. They are also far more likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy, contract an STD and also to use drugs for properties such as weight loss.

The problem with pills

Teen girls are especially attracted to prescription pills, attracted by the ease of access, the perception of safety, and the perception of positive side effects (decreased anxiety and weight loss). With some prescription pain killers every bit as addictive as heroin, this is problematic.

Additionally, teen girls tend to abuse for longer on average before receiving intervention and professional help. Teen boys using drugs and alcohol are more likely to get in trouble at school, more likely to get into fights or problems with the law, or more likely to have a DUI; while teen girl users tend to avoid most of these problems. The problem is that without some of these obvious signs of use, parents and teachers remain unaware of the level of use, and are unable to intervene in a timely manner.

Parents need to be on the lookout for drug and alcohol use and abuse in teenage girls, and understand that some of the signs may not obviously point to drug use.
Trust Your Teen Guidebook and 12 Panel Drug Testing Cup System. Tests for 12 drugs including THC, Cocaine, Meth, OPI, AMP, and More

Increasing moodiness and depression is a normal sign of drug use and abuse that very rarely gets identified as such, with parents misattributing changes in behavior to the normal expressions of adolescence. While some moodiness can obviously be expected during the formative adolescent years, excessive signs of depression are not normal; and very likely indicate a greater problem.

If your teen no longer has any interest in family activities or wants to spend all of their time in their room, you should be concerned.

If your teen no longer cares as much about their appearance, you should be concerned.

If your teen suddenly drops all old friends for an assortment of new, and seemingly unsavory friends; you should be concerned.

If grades suddenly slip, you should be concerned.

Any or all of these behavioral signs may or may not indicate a problem with drugs or alcohol, but they are worrying behaviors and they do need to be investigated; and if your child is not experimenting or abusing drugs or alcohol, they may be enduring some form of clinical depression. A professional diagnosis can be very helpful for parents concerned about the health and safety of an at risk teen.

You can never protect your teen from all of the dangers out there, but you can do a lot simply by staying involved and active in their life, by leading with a good example on drugs and alcohol use, and by having clear and understood rules on the use of any form of drugs or alcohol.

Talk to your teen, stay involved, make time for mutually enjoyable activities; you’ll be in a far better position to evaluate what changes in behavior may mean, and how far from normal these changes really are.

Simple Changes To a Healthier You Teen Fitness Teen Health and College Health

Posted by Dreamer On July - 29 - 2009 Comments

Teen health, teen fitness and college health is everywhere you look. Teen health is on TV, articles are written about college health (hello, Freshman 15) and long-term studies are done on teen fitness.

However, all exercising aside (don’t get me wrong, exercising is crucial to teen health and teen fitness) the main reason teen health and college health is so bad is in cafeterias everywhere.

It’s very PC to be concerned with teen health and teen fitness. It is great publicity for superintendents, principals and deans everywhere to talk about teen fitness and college health. They put Band Aids on a severed artery.

Concerned with teen health and teen fitness? Then the high school (some, unfortunately not all) will add a salad bar. And, usually it’s filled with brown “greens” stale veggies, etc. Not exactly the way to attack the teen health and teen fitness crisis in the country.

Concerned with college health? The university adds an all-you-can-eat deli buffet (where sandwiches can be as artery-clogging as a Big Mac) for a “healthier” alternative. And universities concerned with college health also add the salad bar right next to the pizza, French fries and hamburgers.

Teen health, teen fitness and college health all start with education. It’s so bad that we took an adult disease, Diabetes, and our terrible teen health and teen fitness has made a youth version of it (Type II Diabetes). Bad teen health and teen fitness has created a new disease! Think about that for a minute.

To really get to the root of teen health and college health, the students need to be educated on teen fitness in general, but we need to get back to the basics. Everyone, theoretically, knows that McDonald’s and Burger King won’t help out teen fitness. But do they really know the possible long-term damage?

Thin kids can’t see how bad their hearts are. Most overweight kids know something about teen fitness and college health (like, for example, McDonalds being bad for you) but tons still don’t. How many overweight teens do you see chowing down a Big Mac? Too many don’t understand enough about college health and teen health.

Make simple changes to change teen health and teen fitness. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it took the teen over a decade to get overweight. They won’t lose it overnight.

If you are really concerned with college health and teen fitness, then make small changes to start off like switching to a low fat dressing, eating chicken instead of beef, diet soda instead of regular, and lowering your portions of carbs.

These small changes will improve teen health, teen fitness and college health drastically. And these changes are nothing more than tiny alterations.

Five Tips For Teen Health Teen Fitness And College Health

Posted by Dreamer On July - 29 - 2009 Comments

Anyone who is concerned with teen health, teen fitness and college health, need to look no farther than your local gym floor to see why there is such a problem with teen fitness today.

Students don’t know the first thing about college health or teen health, and that is drastically affecting their expanding waistline. Students who are concerned with teen fitness need to alter their workout easier in order to become more fit.

Health In College Could Be Important: TollieSchmidt.com

Health In College Could Be Important: TollieSchmidt.com

College health is tough to regulate because of the late night parties, all you can eat buffets and drastically different lifestyle. Also, college students are much less likely to be as active as they were in high school, then teen health was much easier to come by (think 3-sport athlete).

Most teens, unfortunately, know nothing about teen health and teen fitness, and it shows in gyms across the country. Teens are showing up to the gym to workout, but we will not address the issues of teen health and teen fitness until we alter their workouts.

Here are quick tips to improve teen fitness, teen health and college fitness:

1- Rest less and workout more. It’s tough for teens to lose weight while they are resting five minutes between sets. You need to get up and workout more. Do a set of jumping jacks between sets, it’ll work! That’ll help out teen health and college health.

2- Lift weights to lose weight. Teen health is terrible because they, especially females, waste their time on the treadmills and elliptical. College health would greatly improve with shorter workouts with lifting more weights, and teen fitness wouldn’t be such an issue if teens lifted.

3- When doing cardio, do it right. Long distance running or walking will not improve teen health. In fact, there have been studies done to prove that adding aerobic training to a workout showed nothing that dieting alone wouldn’t help. Do a short run (less than a minute) followed by a shorter walk. That’ll greatly help teen fitness and college health. It’ll help lose weight!

4- Don’t isolate muscles. Teen health, teen fitness and college health will not improve unless they learn to workout right. Bicep curls will not improve teen health and teen fitness. Neither will triceps kickbacks or sit ups help out college health.

5- For college health, try to stay active. Easier said than done, but college health is just as big of a concern as teen health and teen fitness. Stay active. Go to the gym more. Remember, if you were an athlete last year, and now you do nothing, your college health will deteriorate.

Teen health, teen fitness and college health are a growing concern. But staying fit during your student years can be very simple. Lift weights, rest less, and you will melt the fat away! Remember, college health isn’t all that hard.

Depression is the most common mental health disorder in the United States among teens and adults, and can have a serious impact on the lives of the many teens who suffer from depression.

Teen suicide is a major cause of death among teens, though many do not recognize suicide as a serious threat to a teenagers well being.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers. According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000. For every teen suicide death, experts estimate there are 10 other teen suicide attempts.

Teen Depression and Suicide Illusion: TollieSchmidt.com

In a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center found that almost 1 in 5 teens had thought about suicide, about 1 in 6 teens had made plans for suicide, and more than 1 in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. As many as 8 out of 10 teens who commit suicide try to ask for help in some way before committing suicide, such as by seeing a doctor shortly before the suicide attempt.

The time will come when you’ll see that pretty much everything was better than you thought. That life was more beautiful, people were kinder, greens were greener, and the water was cleaner. But most of all, you’ll see… that you were simply stunning, every day of your life.

Happily, I’ve always known the truth -

Teen Depression & Suicide Video and Emotions

Posted by Dreamer On July - 27 - 2009 Comments

The Life and Death Feelings and Decisions of Depressed and Suicidal Teens.

I have received e-mails from many depressed and suicidal teens.
They seem to feel they are living in total isolation from their parents.
They feel that their parents will not believe them or take them seriously, will not help them, cannot help them, and will be angry and inconvenienced, with their depression and other personal problems.
Unfortunately, I know these things to be true in far too many cases.

Books on Teen Depression and Suicide

Teen Suicide & Depression: TollieSchmidt.com
Teen Suicide & Depression: TollieSchmidt.com

A silent epidemic is ravaging the nation and killing our kids.

In the last 30 years, the suicide rate among teenagers has tripled. A recent survey indicated that 60% of high school students have thought of killing themselves. And every two hours, a young person succeeds in taking his or her own life.

Sadly, most parents and peers don’t know how to recognize or handle the warning signs that someone is contemplating suicide. This Web site provides important information about how to spot signs of danger and secure help for a young person on the edge… before it’s too late.

Risk Factors
Who's At Risk?
Which of the following would you say is the most likely to commit suicide?

A. A straight-A student
B. A student who is gifted in athletics
C. A student who is abusing drugs and failing in school
D. A student who is very popular
E. All of the above are at equal risk

Answer:

E. Under the right — or wrong — circumstances, all of the above could commit suicide.

Teenagers tend to experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up.

For some teenagers, divorce, the formation of a new family with stepparents and stepsiblings, or moving to a new community can be very unsettling and can intensify self-doubts. In some cases, suicide appears to be a “solution.” But depression and suicidal feelings are treatable conditions.

Getting Help
Understanding
courtesy of the American Association of Suicidology

Many people at some time in their lives think about committing suicide. Most decide to live, because they eventually come to realize that the crisis is temporary and death is permanent.

However, people having a crisis sometimes perceive their dilemma as inescapable and feel an utter loss of control. These are some of the feelings and things they experience:

  • Can’t stop the pain
  • Can’t think clearly
  • Can’t make decisions
  • Can’t see any way out
  • Can’t sleep, eat or work
  • Can’t get out of depression
  • Can’t make the sadness go away
  • Can’t see a future without pain
  • Can’t see themselves as worthwhile
  • Can’t get someone’s attention
  • Can’t seem to get control

If you suspect someone close to you is thinking about suicide, it is vitally important that you seek outside professional help. In many cities there are mental health organizations that offer services for little or no fee. You may call The Covenant House Nineline 1-800-999-9999.
